At the age of 17 I figured out the hard way that I had an issue. My parents had enough. I was confronted head on by family, about my addiction to alcohol and cocaine. I foolishly thought I was hiding it well. But that mistake comes with being young, dumb, and addicted to drugs. Fortunately I had parents who understood well enough to keep an eye on me and my friends My parents are also both recovering drug addicts who know the brain scrambling effects of abusing your body and mind for too many years. They wanted me to have a real shot at life.

They knew me well enough to know that a standard 12 step program would not be enough to solve the issues I was facing. They had each been in and out of several programs with only limited results. After some research they had checked themselves into an non-12 step drug treatment center and since have never looked back. So when it came the unfortunate time in their lives to put their only son into rehab, they had no hesitation about what to do. They enrolled me in a form of alternative drug rehab that focused on holistic healing. In other words, this alternative style of treatment focused on me as a whole, as one with the earth and the universe. Sounds like silly hippy stuff right? Well it worked. And it’s been working for 20 plus years.

For anyone who has tried a standard twelve step program and failed, I highly recommend doing some research on an alternative treatment center. After doing some research of my own, I’ve uncovered many that may be right for all walks of life. There are centers strictly for men, women, GLBT, faith-based, and holistic. And since I’ve followed the holistic style of alternative drug rehab, please allow me to tell you a little about it and why it worked for me.

First of all they focus on your dietary intake. They believe that improving the food you take into the body, the stronger your mind and body will be. By removing additives and empty substances from the diet, the holistic approach intends to move the brain to its highest levels of functioning.

The holistic approach also includes massage, meditation, and relaxation treatments, in order to cleanse the mind of all negative thought. We feel that removing negative thinking and negative influences, will create a positive and addiction free path to follow. Tai Chi and Yoga also play a large role in healing the strength of mind and body in order for it to take care of itself and shut out any dependence on toxins.

These are just a few of the things that the holistic approach to nontraditional treatment has to offer. After completing 5 short months in the program, I saw that my life had done a 180. I wrote to my parents and let them know that I was going to train to become an alternative drug counselor and help others just like me. Holistic healing had opened my eyes to a world of peace and confident achievement. I urge anyone who may have a problem to seek help. But I want to show that there are nontraditional treatment programs out there if a twelve step program isn’t working out.

Substance dependency might seem trivial to cure for some especially if the availability of right people and right facility is there. However, addiction did not develop overnight, in turn, it is also not a one-night process to treat, addiction treatment is something the addict and his loved ones had to live each day until hope comes to reality and the patient recovers.

We all know that substance dependency starts with having tolerated the drug in the body until the body develops dependency and addiction symptoms such as, craving, anxious behavior if not having to obtain the drug starts kicking in. This will be the time to call the individual an addict. For the addict, the drug is his or her only rescue to normally function- normal in the sense that he doesn’t experience any apprehension and he feels relaxed and euphoric once he or she takes in the drug. Unknowingly, the addict’s body eventually is destroyed by the drug through too much dependency that the in the brain is destroyed and would then lead to psychological abnormalities. The effects is seen on the behavior of the person. This will affect one’s routine which can negatively affect the person’s relation ship with other people.

When seen as a psychological illness, it cannot be treated through medication alone but the need to modify the individual’s cognition and behavior. Cognitive and behavioral therapies are used together with certain medications in order to treat addiction.

There are places that offer chances to treat these problems. These places are known as drug rehabilitation centers. These institutions offer various programs that would fit different types of substance abuse problem. Different substance abuse problems need different treatment programs. Consequently, finding drug rehab program is simple, but finding for a drug rehab program that is effective and can meet your individual needs is not that easy. There are many components in a drug rehab program.

Drug detoxification program is the very first step in treating drug addiction. This is the process where the body is being cleaned by the toxins brought by the addiction. One should be free from the substance to treat the dependency. Thus, taking it out from the patient’s system is one important stage of the rehab program. Sadly, at this stage, the patient goes through physical and psychological pain. Withdrawal symptoms may occur. Detox, on the other hand, offer 24-hour nursing and medication to help alleviate painful withdrawal symptoms.

Drug rehab programs offer both inpatient and outpatient treatment. Inpatient treatment is a step in the program after detox where the patient joins in group, individual, and family therapy. Outpatient addiction treatment often follows inpatient addiction treatment once the patient is well enough to go back home and maintain his or her recovery. Addiction treatment services are still accessible, but the patient is not required to stay at the drug rehab facility.

Family addiction treatment is important to a patient’s accomplishment in drug rehab programs. This is to solve underlying issues causing the addiction. With this process, the patient is able to resolve any conflicts with family members which could have possibly triggered or caused the addiction. Also, the contribution of family members bring a comforting message to the patient that no matter what happens, family will always be there to support whatever one is going through, in good times and in bad times. Also, during this stage, the patient is no the only one who’s faults are discussed. Also, the likely faults and deficiencies of family members are also discussed and corrected.

Drug addiction is a serious and complex disorder. Appropriate and effective rehabilitation program should be used to treat the illness.

Many people may be unaware of this fact, but the fact remains that nearly twenty-six million people in our country are dealing with some sort of depression. Everyone on the planet has probably been depressed at some point or another. But these statistic people I just quoted spend the majority of their days facing depression. Depression is a frightening reality and can affect anyone. That’s why it’s crucial to get proper treatment if you or someone you know is diagnosed with depression. So here are some depression treatment facts. First you want to achieve remission of the depression. That means you have deleted all of your symptoms. The next step you want to achieve is continuing that remission. Those are the goals of treating depression. Sounds pretty simple, but this is a lifelong battle for those who suffer from depression. Depression tends to recur if it is not properly treated and maintained. The fact of the matter is that everything is o.k. for a while but then when the medication runs out, or gets forgotten, or the patient thinks that they are cured and no longer need treatment, the depression can come back even worse and be harder to get rid of. That’s why it is important to maintain treatment and always be aware that depression is no laughing matter. According to one website, treatment for depression happens in three stages. The first stage’s goal is to relieve the symptoms. This treatment usually lasts six to eight weeks. The second phase deals with sustaining that remission. This time frame is usually around four to five months. If the symptoms return during this time, it is called a relapse. The third stage is called the maintenance stage. The goal of this stage is to maintain treatment therapy in order to keep at bay, a new episode of depression.

Some tips about depression treatment facts are as follows:

Be realistic with your goals. Set achievable goals and don’t overwhelm yourself. Be happy about the little wins. Try to get into the mindset of small victories along the way and not one big one at the end of a difficult process.

Be accepting of stress and work to control it. Stress is inherent in life. If you are realistic about the goals you set and really think about what you can and cannot do. This will help you be able to manage stress so it does not overwhelm you.

Open yourself to friends and family who you trust and allow them to help you. It is natural to not want to involve the people you love with your problems. But they love you too and want to help you get back to yourself again. It is usually better to vent your issues than let them fester inside.

Take time for yourself. It is important to find interests to follow and take some time out to do so. It’s healthy and just as necessary as everything else you must do.

Depression treatment is not easy, but being depressed is much harder. Do research on methods and ideas of treating depression and get on your way to a happier, healthier, and longer life.
