Drug and Alcohol Detox Center Information

Drug or Alcohol Detox
Drug or alcohol detox begins when a person stops consuming a substance that the body has become dependent on. Though the recovery process from alcohol or drug addiction doesn't really begin until the detox or withdrawal period has ended, detox is the first step to recovery and should only be attempted in the safe and comfortable environment of a licensed detox center.

Types Of Detox Centers
This website will explain the difference between non-medical and medically-supervised alcohol and drug detox centers. If you or someone you know has an alcohol and/or drug addiction and considering detox, please seek out advice and help from a physician or licensed detox center.

Non-Medical Detox Centers
For detox from some substances such as Marijuana, Methamphetamine and Cocaine medical treatment is not necessary if the person is otherwise in good health. Rest and good nourishment in the safe and comfortable environment of a licensed non-medical alcohol and drug detox center may be all that is required.

Whenever a person is considering detoxification from an alcohol or drug addiction a complete physical check-up from a physician is always a good idea to avoid complications. If one has a history of heart, liver or kidney problems, as well as diabetes or high blood pressure, they should not detox non-medically. These conditions can cause complications or can even be fatal. Always see a doctor before entering a non-medial detox center.

Medically-Assisted Detox Centers
Discontinuing substances such as alcohol, opiates or Benzodiazepines abruptly, without medical help can also be very dangerous. However, medication can be used to manage the severe withdrawal symptoms these drugs produce and minimize the physical suffering while keeping the patient safe.

Managing severe withdrawal symptoms through the use of medication is what takes place in a Medically-assisted detox center. Some centers have a medical staff on site, while others have enlisted the assistance of a nearby physician that either visits the detox center on a regular basis or the detox staff transports the clients to the doctors office.

The doctor completes an assessment of the situation that usually includes blood work to check for liver damage or other drug-induced complications and then orders the appropriate medications for the situation. They return to the center and the detox staff monitors the use of the medication, the client's progress and reports to the doctor.

The plan is to stabilize (determine the dose of the medication that makes the client comfortable) and then titrate (step down) the client off of the detox medications in a safe and comfortable manner.
